Roadtrippin' - A Long Weekend Trip to Wales

Most of last week was fairly miserable really - Rochelle was sick (swine flu?) and I didn't feel much better. It was also my first 'real' week of work which was pretty stressful. Friends of ours - Shaun and Sarah - decided to go away for the long weekend and invited us along. A perfect chance to get away!

The trip started early Saturday morning. Shaun and Sarah picked us up about 7:30 and we were on our way. Wales is only about 3 hours from London so it isn't a huge drive. The first major attraction was the Severn Bridge - a huge bridge connecting England and Wales. It was awesome to see, but a little hard to get good photos of. We then stopped in Caerleon - its of one of Britain's three permanent Roman Legionary Fortresses and is believed to be the location of King Arthur's Camelot. We went to the museum and took a tour of a recreated Barracks- lead by a guy dressed in the full Roman armour. He was pretty funny and we learnt lots of interesting things about how the romans lived. We also visited some ruins in Caerleon - The Roman Amphitheatre and Barracks. The Amphitheatre was really interesting and ! The barracks was interesting but not much to look at. We also saw an old lady police officer...

Next we headed to Caerphilly Castle in Caerphilly. This is the largest castle in Britain after Windsor. It is so HUGE and has 3 motes. Pretty cool really.

Our next stop was Castle Coch, built in the 1870's upon the remains of a genuine 13th century castle. It is the kind of castle you would imagine in fairy tales - huge round towers amongst the trees...

We then made our way into Cardiff where we were staying for the weekend. We drove around and checked out the city, then took a drive down to Cardiff Bay. After a couple of hours we picked up some dinner and a few drinks, then headed to our hotel and called it a day.

Sunday we got up early and set out for a day around the coast. We visited Penarth, Barry Island, Porthcawl and Swansea. We had a few drinks and dinner in Swansea (including a kangaroo burger), before heading back to Cardiff. Highlights of the day were chasing sheep, and jager-bombs at the walkie...

Monday started off a little slow after a fairly big night on Sunday. We headed to Bristol where we checked out the city as well as driving over Clifton Suspension Bridge. Again hard to get pictures of but an awesome sight... its a few hundred years old, about 75m high and it crosses a HUGE ravine (OK a little exaggeration, but it is pretty big).

Next stop was Bath. We were blown away by this place. It is a really beautiful town with lots of history. I hope we can make it back before we leave. We spent a few hours walking around... most of the time spent trying to find a subway (yes the sandwiches)... in the end we got a nice Cornwall Cornish.

Our final stop was Stonehenge. I can't really describe what it was like... Just kinda makes you think. Its strange to think that those huge stones have been there for hundreds of years! And that they were moved there hundreds of kilometers by people, for whatever reason. We were too cheap to pay the crazily high entry fee but still got really close.

So that was our weekend! As you can see it was pretty action packed. By the end I was pretty tired...

In other news...

It was Rochelle's birthday on Monday. We spent most of the day travelling unfortunately but she got a super-cool present when we got home!

We are also moving flats! We have not found anywhere to go to yet but have told our flatmates we are moving out and will start to look for something soon... We are a bit disappointed but things just weren't working out here with the flatmates... ahh well.

Our next trip is planned for just two weeks time to AMSTERDAM! With a night in Bruges (Belgium) on the way... We are travelling with our friends Shuan and Sarah again. Should be a lot of fun ;)
